FAQs about dental implants

What is a dental implant?

Made of biocompatible titanium metal, a dental implant substitutes for the natural tooth root you lost through injury or extraction. Screw-like in shape, the implant inserts into the jaw and melds to it through osseointegration. Super stable and durable, the implant supports a post and crown, or in the case of extensive tooth loss, a bridge or denture.

Can dental implants work for me?

To qualify for dental implants, you need sufficient bone in the alveolar ridge of your jaw and good overall health. To determine these factors, your dentist will do a complete oral exam and X-ray your jaw to look at the bone quality and size.

Do I have to see a specialty dentist for my implant surgery?

No, you can have your entire evaluation, surgery and follow-up performed by Dr. Chu or Dr. Lin right in our South Pasadena, CA, office.

Will my procedure hurt?

Patients do very well with a local anesthetic. Afterward, you may need ibuprofen or acetaminophen to relieve any residual site soreness.

Will my implants last?

Yes. The vast majority of dental implant surgeries succeed, and the implants themselves last indefinitely, says the Institute for Dental Implant Awareness (IDIA). However, smoking endangers implant sites. So, to maximize your results, ask your primary care physician about a tobacco cessation program.

How do I take care of my new smile?

It's not difficult. Brush twice a day and floss to remove plaque. Your hygienist will show you any special hygiene care you may need if you have multiple implants. Also, ask about an acrylic night guard if you usually clench or grind your teeth as bruxism can threaten the stability of your implants. See Dr. Lin or Dr. Chu semi-annually for your routine cleaning and exam or any time you have a concern about your dental implants.
