Do You Need Root Canal Therapy?
Is sensitivity increasing on that back molar? Any kind of tooth pain--however brief--is concerning. At Renaissance Dental Care in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, your dentist, Dr. John Stockdale, uses root canal therapy to save teeth compromised by painful decay, abscess and other oral health problems. Maybe your tooth needs this reliable restorative service.
Root canal therapy is also called endodontics
Endodontic therapy has reliably healed and strengthened failing teeth for generations. The American Association of Endodontists have refined this specialty over the years, helping literally millions of people keep teeth which otherwise would require extraction due to:
- Deep fracture or decay
- Multiple fillings
- Abscess, or infection, in the soft pulp in the interior chamber and narrow canals in each tooth root
- Weakened tooth structure from congenital malformation or other circumstance
Your root canal
Your Rancho Cucamonga, CA, dentist performs root canals right in the office with no need to refer out to another specialist or oral surgeon. Examination and X-rays tell him if that bothersome back molar of yours can be healed by the treatment.
If it can, you'll receive local anesthetic to numb the tooth and a protective dam to keep the rest of your mouth free of debris from the procedure. Then, the dentist opens the first canal with a high-speed drill and removes the pulp with files of ascending size.
Antibiotics clear up any infection, and gutta-percha, a natural putty, strengthens and seals each canal in turn. A large tooth, such as a molar, may have four separate root canals. Lastly, Dr. Stockdale places a temporary crown over the tooth to support and protect it in the healing phase.
In a week or so, you return to Renaissance Dental Care for a recheck, removal of the temporary cap and placement of a beautiful and permanent porcelain crown. You'll be happy with how your tooth looks and blends in with its neighbors. Plus, any pain or other symptoms will be gone.
At home, care for your renewed tooth with careful twice a day brushing and flossing. See Dr. Stockdale every six months for your usual exam and hygienic cleaning. He'll evaluate your restored tooth to be sure you continue to do well.
