Dental implants are a versatile dental treatment that can replace one or more missing teeth. Implants stand alone and, unlike a traditional tooth replacement option, do not require the help of surrounding healthy teeth to stay in place. Choosing a dental implant can change your life for the better, but learning about this procedure is an important aspect of choosing the best treatment plan for you. Learn more about dental implants with Dr. John Stockdale at Renaissance Dental Care in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
Parts of a Dental Implant
Dental implants have three main parts:
- Implant fixture: The fixture is the component of the implant which fits into the jawbone below your missing tooth. During the healing process, the bone grows around the fixture to hold it securely in place, creating a sturdy foundation for the replacement tooth.
- Prosthetic tooth: Made from porcelain and color-matched to your existing natural teeth, the prosthetic tooth will feel, function, and appear just as a real one. Porcelain’s light-reflecting qualities closely mimic tooth enamel to give you the most lifelike look possible.
- Abutment: The abutment connects the implant to the prosthetic tooth and ensures that your implant prosthetic can be maintained or replaced if necessary. The abutment fits into the fixture and the prosthetic tooth fits over the abutment to complete the implant.
Types of Dental Implants
Dental implants’ versatile nature can achieve various tasks, including:
- Replace a single tooth: Replacing a single tooth uses one dental implant fixture which stands on its own in the socket of the missing tooth. The prosthetic attaches to the fixture via the abutment to fill in the gap.
- Replace multiple teeth: If you have two or more teeth missing in a row, a dental bridge-like prosthetic with several porcelain teeth in a row fills the gap. Two implants on either end hold the restoration in place.
- Attach an implant-supported denture: Implant-supported dentures are a permanent and non-removable alternative to traditional dentures. This tooth replacement option is held in place by four or more dental implants and replaces all the teeth on an arch.
